Salary: £34,250 pa (pro rata)

Grade: 3b

Contract Type: Fixed term (8 – 12 months) full-time (35 hours)

Background

The Museums Department of the Royal College of Surgeons in England is seeking to appoint a dynamic and highly motivated individual to be Digital Curator to cover maternity leave.

This is an exciting time to join the Museums Department at the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng). Following a major building re-development the Hunterian Museum re-opened to the public in May this year, after a six year closure, and in October 2022 the RCSEng Anatomy and Pathology Museum re-opened for professional audiences including students studying medicine and healthcare courses.

The Hunterian and the Anatomy and Pathology Museum are world-class museums: The Hunterian Museum welcomes around 100,000 visitors a year and the Anatomy and Pathology Museum is open to healthcare professionals and students. The Hunterian museum traces the history of surgery from ancient times to the present day. The displays include over 2,000 preparations from the collection of the eighteenth century anatomist and surgeon John Hunter, alongside instruments, equipment, models, paintings and archive material.

The Anatomy and Pathology collection contains over 1000 specimens of human tissue.

In April 2023 the new Hunterian website was launched, designed by Cogapp; existing social media channels of Facebook and Twitter (X) were re-launched and new ones established: Instagram and YouTube. In November a new Hunterian App by Bloomberg Connect will be launched.
