About the role

The Museum department at the Royal College of Surgeons of England at Lincoln’s Inn Fields in central London is seeking an enthusiastic person with a passion for museums who can bring their experience of providing excellent customer service, strong staff management skills and knowledge of museum retail management to the new post of Museums Operations Manager.

The department oversees two world-class Museums: The Hunterian Museum https://hunterianmuseum.org/ open to the general public free of charge welcomes around 100,000 visitors a year and the Anatomy and Pathology Museum https://www.rcseng.ac.uk/museums-and-archives/anatomy-and-pathology-museum/ open to healthcare professionals and students.

The Museum Operations Manager will be responsible for the daily running of the Hunterian Museum, including the Museum shop and the Anatomy and Pathology Museum. They will be able to demonstrate exceptional organisational and people management skills. They will be responsible for the line management of the Museum supervisors and volunteers. The volunteers undertake a wide range of duties vital to the Museum activities and the post holder will be responsible for their recruitment, induction and ongoing support.

Working with Museum colleagues the Manager will maximise opportunities for public and professional engagement by managing talks and tours, group visits and special events. They will optimise opportunities to generate income through the management and development of the Museum shop, both onsite and online, and by encouraging visitor donations. Experience of shop sales systems (the Hunterian Museum uses Shopify) is desirable.

The role requires the post holder to work a five-day week including regular weekends. The post-holder will act as the main duty manager of the Hunterian Museum, covering two weekends out of four and some public holidays.
