The Surgical Discovery Workshop is perfect for anyone who wishes to pursue a career in medicine or looking to enhance their surgical knowledge. Students will have a chance to visit the Hunterian Museum to learn about the history of surgery and how it has changed over time. They will also take part in a practical workshop where surgeons will teach basic suturing skills and surgical knot-tying. The session will give the students an opportunity to speak to surgeons and find out more about medicine and surgery as a career.

About the workshop
Objective: To introduce students to basic surgical skills and provide an overview of careers in surgery and the wider surgical team
The students will have hands-on experience:
- Learning about careers in Surgery and the wider surgical teams
- Gloving and gowning up
- Surgical knot tying demonstration and practice
- Practicing basic suturing skills
- Asking questions to a retired surgeon or medical trainee.
Group size
This workshop has a maximum capacity of 20 students. The ratio of adults to pupils depends on students’ age:
- Age 14-16: 1 adult to 10 pupils
- Age 16-18: 1 adult to 15 pupils
The minimum group size is 6 people, including adults.
Duration
2 hours 30 minutes
45 minutes in the Museum followed by a 90 minutes workshop. There is a 15 minute buffer for arrival time, toilet break and walking to the workshop room.

Please note that the Hunterian Museum is closed on Monday.
Cost and Cancellation Policy
This workshop is £500+VAT per group payable by invoice.
If you are unable to attend your session, it is your responsibility to advise us with as much notice as possible, ideally four weeks or more*, please email [email protected] to cancel your booking.
*If you notify us at least 4 weeks before the date of your visit we are happy to offer you a full refund.
